How this Sweden salary calculator works (2026)

Headlines about a “52% tax rate in Sweden” mix municipal tax, state tax and employer contributions. For typical employees the effective rate on cash salary is much lower, because of the basic deduction (grundavdrag) and the jobbskatteavdrag earned-income credit. This tool includes both.

Municipal tax

The total local tax rate (municipality + region) averages 32.38% in 2026. Lowest: Österåker at 28.93%. Highest: Dorotea at 35.65%. Stockholm 30.55%, Gothenburg 32.60%, Malmö 32.42%. Source: SCB local tax rates 2026.

State tax

A 20% state income tax applies to taxable earned income above the threshold — SEK 660,400 (under 66) or SEK 751,100 (age 66+) in this estimator. That is why a SEK 400,000 salary in Stockholm does not look like “half your pay in tax”.

Jobbskatteavdrag

This credit reduces tax owed on employment income, often around SEK 30,000–40,000 per year for typical salaries, phasing down at very high incomes. Leave it out and the calculator will scare people with the wrong number.

Data last updated: 2025-12-15 (SCB rates). Grundavdrag and jobbskatteavdrag use simplified income bands, not Skatteverket’s full table.
