Many rentals — especially first-hand (förstahand) contracts — are allocated by queues where you collect queue days from the moment you register, not from when you apply for a specific flat. Someone who signed up three years ago beats a fresh applicant even if the newcomer applies for more listings.
City/municipal queues (Bostadsförmedlingen in Stockholm, Boplats Göteborg, Boplats Syd (Malmö)) are one system. Private landlord queues are another. Register for several. Andrahand (second-hand sublets) is the usual bridge while queue time builds — but sublets should be approved. Cash-only deals and “pay a deposit before viewing” are common scam patterns aimed at newcomers.
Compare rent with the cost of living calculator and use the personnummer residency checklist before you sign.

2 Register as early as you can — even before you move
Queue days start when you sign up, not when you apply for a specific flat. Three years in the queue beats a perfect application filed yesterday.
3 Keep your profile complete
Income, household size and (when you have it) personnummer. Incomplete profiles get skipped.
4 Use andrahand as a bridge — legally
Sublets should be approved by the landlord or housing association. Avoid cash-only deals, passports held as 'deposit', and listings far below market that demand payment before viewing.
Most newcomers rent first. Buying is either a bostadsrätt (a share in a co-op, plus a monthly fee) or a fastighet (freehold house/land). That is not the same as “condo vs house” in many countries — the association’s finances matter. Budget for a down payment and the bank’s mortgage cap.
